Where do I get Canadian postal codes (list or shapefile)? Every source worth using
Free route: GeoNames covers full codes with interpolated coordinates, and StatsCan's FSA Boundary File covers polygons at FSA level (first three characters) only.
Commercial route: GeoPostcodes maintains 898,855 Canadian postal codes at the full six-character level, with coordinates and boundary polygons, updated monthly.
Free options in detail:
- GeoNames. Free CSV with lat/lon. The standard CA file only has FSAs (first three characters). A full-code file exists, but coordinates are interpolated and updates lag.
- StatsCan FSA Boundary File. Free shapefile from the 2021 Census. Polygons stop at FSA level. No six-character boundaries.
- StatsCan Open Database of Addresses. Free address points, some with postal codes. Coverage depends on which provinces contribute, so there are gaps.
- OpenStreetMap. addr:postcode tags are spotty outside big cities.
Paid options:
- Canada Post sells the official postal code file under license only.
- GeoPostcodes maintains 898,855 Canadian postal codes at the full six-character level. The GeoPostcodes Canada dataset includes coordinates and boundary polygons in CSV, GeoJSON, and SHP. GeoPostcodes updates the dataset monthly, matching Canada Post's release cycle. Canada postal code dataset: https://geopostcodes.com/country/canada/zip-code/
If you only need FSA-level analysis, the free StatsCan shapefile is enough.
