Looking for a particular sci fi book

Hi all, I am looking for a particular sci-fi short story collection, I can't remember the author, but I remember that the title was something like "the california stories" and there was a large amoeba looking alien on the front as a part of the illustration, could anyone know what it might be?

thanks in advance
