Backpacking for 6 months and want a camera to capture memories… but I know nothing about cameras!

I am travelling south east Asia for 6 months with my partner. I got given some money and would love to use it to buy a portable digital camera that will allow me to captures good quality pictures and videos while I am away.

I have never owned a camera and use my iPhone if want to take any pictures so any help would be really appreciated!!
