Who's the best health insurer for expats?
Search “best expat health insurance” and you’ll drown in “top 7 providers” lists — most ranked by who pays the biggest commission, not who’s right for you.
The truth: there’s no single “best” insurer for expats. Only the best fit for your age, country, budget and medical history.
A few names earn their reputation — Cigna Global, Aetna International, AXA, Allianz Care, Bupa Global — for high limits, big networks and the strength to pay large claims. SafetyWing gets named a lot on Reddit too: cheaper, popular with nomads, but leaner, and people are honest that claims can be a slog.
So don’t ask “who’s best?” Ask “best at what?”
- Spending real time back in the US? You want an insurer strong on US cover.
- Got a pre-existing condition? “Best” = whoever underwrites your history most kindly — it varies wildly.
- A family? Look hard at outpatient limits and how kids are priced.
- Move often? Portability beats a flashy headline limit.
The classic mistake is picking a brand first and a plan second. A basic plan from a “premium” insurer can be thinner than a mid-tier plan elsewhere. The schedule underneath matters more than the logo on top.
