Question for breeders/biologists-- how quickly to release wild hatchlings?
I'm a park ranger in Florida. About 2 months ago we were beginning some paving work and found snake eggs. Since the area was busy with construction and they would likely be crushed or buried, we've been incubating them. There is a kingsnake frequently seen in that area. The eggs began to pip last night, and the noses poking out are almost certainly kingsnakes.
I've found plenty of information about incubation and the next steps, but it's all geared toward breeding for captive pets. I can't find any information about whether wild snakes hang around the nest for a while before dispersing. I've read that they have their first shed and first meal after about a week or two, so cannibalistic kings should definitely be separated before then. But should we release them as soon as they leave the egg? Give them a day or two to rest? Separate them into deli cups and give them a lizard as a first meal before sending them on their way?
Just want to give them the best shot at life with as little stress as possible. Thanks.
