three-dollar Lodge find at Goodwill, is cast iron actually getting harder to spot, or is it just my area?
Pulled a Lodge 10 inch out from under about fifteen mismatched cake pans at Goodwill yesterday. Paid three dollars. It had some rust on it and whatever the previous owner cooked last had basically fossilized onto the surface, which honestly meant nobody else wanted it and I got to walk right out with it.
Took a few hours to scrub it down and get it reseasoned and now it looks like it came off the shelf. The frustrating part is I have been checking thrift stores pretty regularly for over a year because the new ones are weirdly expensive and I kept finding thin stamped steel stuff that warps the second you look at it. This one is thick and heavy the way they should be.
The pricing always gets me. Someone marked it at three dollars when the same pan at Target is sixty something. Either they didn't know or they just didn't care. Either way I'm not complaining. Garage sales have been useless for cast iron lately too because everyone has figured out they can flip it, so thrift stores are basically the last honest hunting ground.
Anyone else finding that cast iron has gotten harder to spot or is it just my area being picked clean?
