Public hospital in China that offers affordable reconstructive surgery

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share something that might help people who are dealing with a failed or unsatisfactory result from plastic surgery.

A friend of mine from the UK had gone to Turkey for an eyelid procedure. The outcome was asymmetrical, one side looked overcorrected, and she was left with both aesthetic and functional problems. Private clinics in the UK were expensive just for an assessment, and she was worried about making another costly mistake.

Because my wife works as a plastic surgeon at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital (the public hospital that ranks number one in China for plastic and reconstructive surgery), I told her to get an independent case review through their International Department.

The surgeons there do thousands of procedures every year and regularly see revision cases, including many patients who previously had procedures overseas that did not go as planned. They are used to assess patients via photos and history and giving a straightforward opinion on what can realistically be improved.

In her case the feedback was clear and practical. They explained what could be corrected, what the limitations were, and what recovery would look like. That independent opinion took a lot of the pressure off her decision.

She later travelled to Shanghai, had the revision done, and is much happier with the result now. And to her positive surprise, the cost is considerably lower than compared to the UK. Most importantly, since it is a well regarded public hospital with a strong reputation to maintain, the surgeons there will not undertake any procedure they do not have confidence in.

It can be a good choice to first get a clinical opinion from a high volume public hospital team that is not trying to sell a package. Its better to get an honest second opinion before spending money and time undergoing surgery if the results will not turn out good.

Happy to answer questions if it is useful.
