Would I be selfish for asking for my uninterrupted me time and telling my wife to stop cooking during my off days ?
My wife (35) and I (37) have two young kids. I work a typical Monday–Friday, 9–5 schedule, while she usually works noon–9 p.m. Her days off are during the week, and mine are on weekends. Because of our schedules, I spend most of my time caring for the kids. I don't mind—it was the opposite a few years ago, and she handled most of the childcare then.
Having kids has meant making sacrifices. I canceled my gym membership and built a home gym, and I rarely play video games anymore. My main downtime is usually from about 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, when I like to relax with a beer and play games.
Recently, my wife has gotten into cooking and makes some great meals, but some recipes take hours. On Friday or Saturday nights she'll sometimes start cooking after work, and dinner won't be finished until 1 a.m.
Since she's downstairs cooking and the kids are asleep upstairs, I stay with them. That means I lose most of my only uninterrupted free time. I'm starting to resent it, but I'm not sure if it's selfish to ask her not to do long cooking projects on my only nights to myself.
She also gets about eight kid-free hours on her weekdays off while I'm at work, and when we're both home we share parenting. My days off, on the other hand, are mostly spent as the primary caregiver because of our work schedules.
Bit of context. I have bad anxiety and we experienced an emergency with our four year old when they were being unattended. So, we both insist on having at least one parent on the same floor as the sleeping kids.
