How do you see your relationship with having a noticeable age gap?
About 4 months ago, I met a woman on Reddit. We started talking as friends, and over time we became really close. We talked about almost everything and gradually got comfortable sharing our personal lives with each other.
She was around 6-10 years older than me. She told me she was divorced once, and her second marriage was also falling apart because her husband was abusive. She even showed me the marks on her hands from the abuse. She was doing her master's while dealing with all of this.
On top of that, she was taking care of her child while trying to manage everything on her own. Her husband was using her money instead of supporting the family. Since it was her second marriage, she also didn't have much support from her own parents and knew she would eventually have to go back and live with them after the divorce. She was carrying a lot on her shoulders and often felt alone.
At first I just wanted to be there for her as a friend. But after spending so much time talking, I realised I had developed feelings for her. I told her honestly, expecting she might not feel the same, but to my surprise she accepted my feelings.
We never met in person or even saw each other's faces, but somehow we still became emotionally attached. We talked every day, shared our worries, made each other laugh, flirted, and became a part of each other's daily lives. It was my first relationship, and for the first time I felt what it was like to have someone who genuinely listened, understood me, and cared about how my day went.
The relationship lasted around three months.
One day she was already under a lot of stress because of everything happening in her life. I tried to cheer her up by teasing her the way I usually did, but this time it upset her. She blocked me. Two days later she came back and said she didn't have the emotional energy for a relationship anymore and wanted to focus on getting out of her situation.
I wanted to explain that I never meant to hurt her and that I was only trying to make her smile, but she had already made her decision. I respected it, even though it hurt.
It's been four months since then, and I still think about her sometimes. After that, I tried talking to women around my age, but I realised what I miss isn't just that relationship. I miss the emotional maturity, patience, and understanding I experienced with her. Maybe I'm unfairly comparing everyone to one person, and I know that's something I need to work on.
Has anyone else here had a relationship that ended without proper closure? How did you stop comparing new people to someone who had such a big impact on your life?
