NParent visiting my home
Longtime lurker here, just had to post today to vent. I moved out of my home country about a decade ago after the death of my non-Nparent (angel dad) because I knew I would not survive living with the NParent (mom) . I am the golden child and my elder sibling is the scapegoat and by twist of life's practicalities she ended up back home living with Nmom for a few years before she eventually moved to live in the same country as me.
Anyway, living away from Nmom significantly improved my relationship with her, being able to use the distance and newly enforced boundaries to my advantage.
I suffer from major mental health disorders including a personality disorder and severe depression, from early years before I even knew what mental health was. Years of medication and therapy later, and with a loving and supportive partner in my life, things are bearable.
However I've only just realised in the last few years that my struggles may actually in part be due to heavily masked undiagnosed neurodivergence and I'm currently on a waiting list for a diagnosis of ADHD/autism spectrum/both. But just knowing an explanation for much of what I experienced has already been liberating.
One to those experiences being misphonia. So I used to think I really hate hearing people chew. Which I do, but now I know it's a sensory symptom of my neurodivergence.
Usually on lunch breaks at work it drives me mad when I hear colleagues chewing, and at home when my partner is eating things that are crunchy.
Anyway Nmom is visiting me for a week and (among 99 other problems she is causing) I just realised my misphonia cranks up by x1000 when she chews food. Like hearing her chewing is physically hurting my brain cells. I just had to put music on Alexa to drown the noise instead of losing my mind.
