[18M] first time a guy ever cried on my shoulder and I totally blanked

So this happened two nights ago and I keep replaying it. My boyfriend (20M) and I have only been official like six weeks, both freshman year, met at intramural basketball. We’re still in that goofy honeymoon phase where everything feels easy and we mostly just laugh and wrestle around and order late-night pizza.

He came over to my dorm after a rough midterm and the second the door shut he just… broke. Full-on crying, like shoulders shaking, face buried in my hoodie. Said his dad called and ripped into him about grades and “wasting the scholarship” and some other stuff that hit him hard. I’ve never seen him like that. Ever. Dude is usually the chill jock type who cracks jokes when stuff gets awkward.

I froze. Completely. Put my arm around him because that felt like the minimum, but my brain went blank. No words, no “it’ll be okay,” nothing. Just sat there feeling useless while he got it out. Eventually he calmed down, we watched some dumb YouTube, and he left around midnight saying he felt better. But I keep thinking I failed the moment. Like, is there a right way to handle that? Do I ask more questions next time or just shut up and hold him? I grew up in a house where nobody really cried in front of each other so this is brand new territory.

Any other guys deal with their first “he actually needs me” moment this early and not screw it up? Feel like I need a playbook.
