[Question] lost the perfect watch and need a new one
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for a new watch, with a maximum budget of around €2,000. The reason is unfortunately that my King Seiko 5626-7110 was lost in transit while I sent it in for service. At the moment, I’m hoping that the shipping insurance will at least reimburse part of its value.
I’m looking for a real GADA watch—something I can wear for pretty much anything: a Sunday outing, playing with my kids, and the occasional wedding.
I’m not the kind of person who wants to stand out through luxury. One thing I loved about my King Seiko was that it mostly just looked old and a little broken: the date was wrong because the quickset mechanism no longer worked, it had plenty of wear marks, etc. But at the same time, it still had something special that kept making me look at it: a bit of shine in the sunlight here, a reflection there, the beautiful geometry of the case and dial. I really appreciate those small details.
In terms of style, I’m still drawn to King Seiko. I like the current models, but I’m not fully convinced—somehow they seem to be more of a fashion piece and feel like they’re missing something. Another vintage King Seiko? Probably not, either. It would feel a bit strange to simply buy the same watch again.
More generally, I like watches with a slightly Calatrava-like feel. For example, I really like the Grand Seiko SBGW301 and perhaps the SBGX263. I also like the current 36 mm Tudor Ranger in Dune or black, as well as the current 36 mm and 38 mm Seiko Presage models. Although with the Presage, I do wonder whether they are really worth around €1,000€.
The King Seiko was somehow close to perfect for me: understated but still beautiful, with history and character. I’m open to manual wind, automatic, or quartz. What would you recommend?
