Family member that doesn’t play games is trying to get into it but keeps resorting to button mashing, any tips?

Tried explaining how fighters work in the context of this game as best as I could but as title says, person keep going back to mashing all four buttons. Any recommendations to help them out? They want to play as Korra the most.
