Aluminium foil residue successfully removed from windows

Solved

Like many people in the heatwave (uk) I added aluminium foil to the outside of my french doors in an effort to keep out the sun. This worked well but left a residue on my windows.

I did slightly panic that I might not be able to remove it, but I googled and found many suggested solutions. None worked for me.

Eventually I read about using sticky stuff remover and a razor blade window scraper, but before buying these things I decided to try everything I already had in the house.

Eventually I decided to try citric acid. I love this as a cleaner, it’s amazing on toilets and sinks. I made up a solution with pint of boiling water and 4 tablespoons of citric acid. Wiped it over the glass with a new washing up sponge (mine are cellulose and coconut husk scourer). Let it sit for a bit then gently used the scourer to scrub off the marks. (Tested this in the corner first to check it didn’t scratch). Probably took 20 minutes to do both full height glass doors.

Then wiped down with a wet cloth with a tiny bit of washing up liquid. Then used my normal glass cleaner (Method) with kitchen roll. My doors are now sparkling and the residue is gone.

I wanted to share this as I have found many posts where people are worried they have permanently destroyed their windows. You haven’t! Citric acid did the job for me.

I tried these first and none worked: white vinegar, isopropyl alcohol, lemon juice, surgical spirit, nail varnish remover, WD40, washing up liquid, silver cleaner.

I didn’t try bicarb or bar keepers friend as I was worried about scratching the glass.
