First time player, and I’m curious to crowdsource opinion on the backstory of my character: A Tremere detective named Vesper

General Discussion

Summary

Vesper Ravenwrath always believed that knowledge was power—he just didn’t know how literally true that was.
As a private detective, Vesper specialized in unraveling what others couldn’t. He traced financial ghosts, found people who didn’t want to be found, and uncovered patterns hidden beneath coincidence. He had no love for authority, but he respected systems—especially the invisible ones that kept cities functioning. His work demanded patience, skepticism, and an eye for the unnatural gaps in a story.
Those gaps led him to magic.
The case that ended his mortal life began as a routine missing-person investigation: a graduate student last seen near a closed historical library. Vesper followed the paper trail into academic circles, forbidden collections, and rumors of “blood rituals” dismissed as performance art. The closer he came, the more the evidence stopped behaving rationally—symbols that induced migraines, surveillance footage that degraded into static, witnesses who contradicted themselves without realizing it.
That was when his sire intervened.
They approached Vesper not as a predator, but as a colleague. A scholar with cold eyes and meticulous speech, they seemed less interested in his blood than his mind. They asked him questions—about logic, ethics, and how far he would go for the truth. When Vesper realized the case was no longer human, it was already too late to walk away.

The Embrace: A Theft, Not a Gift

The vampire who would sire Vesper was not supposed to.
A Tremere occultist—whether Regent, apprentice, or renegade remains unclear—had been tracking the same phenomenon Vesper was investigating. Rather than silence him, they watched. Tested him. Fed him fragments of truth disguised as red herrings. Vesper proved useful—too useful.
When Vesper uncovered something he was never meant to see—possibly a Tremere ritual gone wrong, a forbidden blood experiment, or evidence of infernal taint—the decision was made hastily.
He was Embraced in a rain-soaked alley beneath a flickering streetlamp, his final mortal thoughts not of fear, but of unfinished work. And Scarlett.
There was no proper indoctrination. No Pyramid initiation. No explanation.
And then—his sire vanished.
Whether destroyed, disappeared into the Chantry hierarchy, or deliberately erased themselves is unknown. What is known is this: Vesper was left without guidance, protection, or clearance, an unregistered Tremere with forbidden knowledge and no master to vouch for him.
