Hypermobility and lower back pain
Hi everyone,
I have some questions about lower back pain and stability but I'm not sure if I should post here because I'm not formally diagnosed with hypermobility and not sure if back pain is even a related issue. But I could use some help and I wanted to hear if any of you have experienced similar so I hope it's okay for me to ask here. 🙏 Please let me know if that's not the case.
For context, I think I might have hypermobility because:
- I am very flexible to the extent where people comment on it regularly and ask if I train mobility (I don't, but I do stretch regularly as I also exercise regularly)
- I struggle with stability and balance. I generally feel wobbly and loose and this makes weightlifting difficult because I don't feel like I have a solid foundation to perform lifts from
- I've experienced a few injuries (forearm tendonitis, sesamoiditis and IT band syndrome) however these could just be related to the activities I do (I'm very active and do multiple kinds of exercise so could just be overuse)
- I get bad DOMS and some joint pain from weightlifting even though I've lifted for years. I'm also quite a bad insomniac though so my recovery is probably pretty poor
- My joints click a lot and my hip bones kind of grate in the socket? Idk how to describe, this, it doesn't hurt but just feels a bit unpleasant
- I am clumsy and bruise very easily (again this also gets a few comments)
Like I said some of these things could be caused by overtraining and poor recovery. I have reduced the amount of exercise I do to allow myself to recover better but still experience instability and bad DOMS. I struggle to build strength in general and progress very slowly.
However, the main issue I'm dealing with is back pain and my lower back feeling constantly fatigued. The main trigger for this seems to be strength training but it's also brought about by carrying a heavy backpack or sitting down for periods of more than 1 hour. My lower back feels tired pretty much constantly and I end up sitting and standing in all sorts of weird positions to try to counteract this.
I have tried exercises to strengthen the back and core such as the McGill Big 3, dead bugs, farmer carries etc. but they all cause pain in my lower back. Even the most basic progressions like side plank with knees on the floor I feel fatiguing my lower back.
I'm just at a loss what to do at this point and wondering if anyone here has experienced this and could give me some advice? I'm so tired of feeling weak and slightly in pain constantly and really want to see some change. 🥲
Apologies for the lengthy post but this has been bothering me for a while and it's turned into a bit of a vent!
