Does anyone else feel like British and Irish actors are completely dominating Hollywood right now? Look at the 2025/2026 lineup...
Hey everyone,
I've been noticing a major trend in Hollywood lately where British, Irish, and other European actors seem to be taking on a massive number of leading roles. I was looking through the recent and upcoming slate of major blockbuster movies and prestige TV shows for 2025 and 2026, and it feels like almost every major lead role, Emmy-contending drama, and massive studio tentpole is being handed to talent from across the pond.
To put this into perspective, just look at some of the biggest movies of 2026 (both recently released and still to come):
2026 Movies (Recent & Upcoming)
- "Disclosure Day" (Directed by Steven Spielberg - released earlier this year): Stars Emily Blunt (English), Colin Firth (English), and Josh O'Connor (English).
- "The Incomer": Features Domhnall Gleeson (Irish), Gayle Rankin (Scottish), and Grant O'Rourke (Scottish).
- "No Ordinary Heist": Stars Eddie Marsan (English) and Éanna Hardwicke (Irish).
- "Madfabulous": Features Callum Scott Howells (Welsh), Ruby Stokes (English), and Rupert Everett (English).
- "Shelter": Stars Jason Statham (English), Naomi Ackie (English), Daniel Mays (English), Harriet Walter (English), and Bill Nighy (English).
- "Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man" (Netflix): Stars Cillian Murphy (Irish), Barry Keoghan (Irish), Sophie Rundle (English), and Stephen Graham (English).
- "Highlander" Reboot: Stars Henry Cavill (English) and Karen Gillan (Scottish).
Prestige TV Shows (HBO, Netflix, Apple TV+, etc.)
When you look at the most popular, Emmy-buzzworthy shows running through 2025 and 2026, the trend is even more obvious:
- "Silo" (Apple TV+): Anchored by Rebecca Ferguson (Swedish/British), alongside massive UK talent like Harriet Walter (English), Iain Glen (Scottish), and David Oyelowo (English).
- "Widow’s Bay" (Apple TV+): This highly anticipated mystery thriller stars Matthew Rhys (Welsh) and Kate O'Flynn (English).
- "House of the Dragon" (HBO): Virtually the entire cast of this massive Emmy contender is British, led by Emma D'Arcy (English), Matt Smith (English), and Olivia Cooke (English).
- "The Crown’s Shadow" / "The Dark Court" (Netflix): Featuring heavyweights like Olivia Colman (English), Tobias Menzies (English), and Taron Egerton (Welsh).
Not to mention the absolute A-listers already running the show:
Outside of these specific projects, look at who is currently carrying Hollywood's biggest franchises and critical darlings:
- Florence Pugh (English) – Dune: Part Two, Oppenheimer, Thunderbolts*
- Tom Holland (English) – Spider-Man, Uncharted
- Saoirse Ronan (Irish) – Little Women, Outrun, Blitz
- Robert Pattinson (English) – The Batman, Mickey 17
- Andrew Garfield (British-American) – Spider-Man, We Live in Time
- Anya Taylor-Joy (British-American) – Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Queen's Gambit
- Benedict Cumberbatch (English) – Doctor Strange, Sherlock
- Jodie Comer (English) – Killing Eve, The Bikeriders
- Tom Hardy (English) – Venom, Mad Max: Fury Road
- Nicholas Hoult (English) – Nosferatu, Superman
- Dev Patel (English) – Monkey Man, Lion
- Idris Elba (English) – Luther, Sonic the Hedgehog
(And I'm not even posting about the Canadians and the Australians who are part of the Commonwealth!)
What do you think is driving this? Is it because they are more "classically trained"? Is it just a casting trend, or do British and European actors genuinely dominate the modern Hollywood landscape now?
Would love to hear your thoughts!
