Order left at door

So, yesterday I had a delivery and I always request a hand off and have to give the pin to the driver but yesterday the driver left my order at the door then sent a message asking for the pin. My son told me the person that was walking away was a man but the app gave a woman's pic and name. I just want to know from drivers what happens when you don't enter the pin?
