He had been a good husband, he wrote. He had never

wronged her.

He grieved her, weeping sorely and not eating or

drinking normally for several months.

So why was she making his life difficult from beyond

the grave?

When you get beyond the huge monuments and read

humbler texts, it opens a window into ancient life (and

death) you won’t see anywhere else.

You see how the ancient Egyptians understood the

relationship between the living and the dead.

The intimacy of their communication with people who

had died.

The completely matter-of-fact way they addressed

people in the afterlife, a place where real people

continued to have real feelings and real grievances.

Their emotions come off the page and swirl around you.

This week’s podcast episode is about texts like this one

— the writing that shows you who the ancient

Egyptians really were, in their own words.

This is a real text, from a real man, written in hieratic on papyrus for his dead wife.
