"I don't feel like training" feels like information about the session. It is actually a prediction, and the research shows that prediction is biased in a consistent direction. Here is what actually helps.

\*\*You are a bad forecaster of your own workouts\*\*

Affective forecasting error is the gap between predicted and actual feeling. Ruby et al. (2011) found across four studies that people consistently underestimate how enjoyable and energizing a workout will be, even asked right beforehand. Loehr and Baldwin (2014) found inactive people predicted much lower enjoyment than active people, but both groups reported equal enjoyment afterward. The forecast is not just pessimistic, it is wrong in a measurable, repeatable direction.

\*\*Action comes before motivation\*\*

Behavioral activation (an evidence-based treatment, effective enough that a 2006 RCT found it matched antidepressant medication for severe depression) is built on the principle that action precedes motivation. Engagement and positive affect return in response to the activity, not before it. For a lifter: waiting to feel like training is not reliable. Target the on-ramp, not the whole session.

\*\*The two best-evidenced tactics\*\*

\- Implementation intentions: a meta-analysis of 94 tests (Gollwitzer and Sheeran 2006) found if-then plans produced d = 0.65 on follow-through. "If it is Monday at 6pm, then I train." You pre-decide the response to a trigger so it is not renegotiated daily.

\- Temptation bundling: Milkman, Minson, and Volpp (2014) let one group only hear captivating audiobooks at the gym. That group went 51% more often. Best within an established schedule.

\*\*When it is actually mental fatigue\*\*

Marcora et al. (2009): after 90 min of demanding cognitive work, cyclists hit exhaustion \~15% sooner, with identical physiology. The impairment was entirely perceived exertion, the same load felt harder. Response: train at lower intensity or RPE, do not skip.

\*\*The stack\*\*

1. Correct the forecast (your prediction is biased).

2. Use your if-then plan (today is already decided).

3. Commit to the minimum (just start).

4. Adjust, do not skip (lighter session, habit survives).
