Highland questions

I’ve recently started y going to the Highlands. I’ve got some questions:

1. what is the gold fireball thing that I run into? And is it a bad thing.
2. why do red animals come straight at me and are they throwing fire or something? And sometimes I just pass by and I have red fire-like flames thrown on me. What’s up with that?
