Rental Issues
Location: Illinois
Hello everyone! I'm currently dealing with a rather serious matter, and frankly after just recovering from a broken foot in three spots, I don't have the mental capacity to handle this alone. I'm currently renting an apartment, and my ceiling is severely caving due to water damage. I requested maintenance to come out, and he confirmed what I already knew. But I was also informed nothing much, if anything will be done until my lease ends in November, when they can tear my ceiling apart to fix it.
It's already gotten worse in the week since I've reported it, and they have no sense of urgency to come and do some sort of temporary fix in hopes it'll hold out another 4-5 months. But the tiles are quite literally bursting at the seams, I doubt it holds for another 5 days, let alone five months. I was basically told because it's their busiest time of year, I need to be patient. So, I called my city's building inspector to come out and look at my apartment, he himself confirmed the situation was dire, and issued them a thirty day notice to repair it. He also noticed a termite and carpenter ant issue, something else I had been complaining about for months.
But still, they're continuing to play games with me. I was told yesterday mid afternoon I'd be hearing from maintenance to get some sort of a game plan, it's been about twenty-four hours since then, yet nobody reached out.
What can I do from here? Am I within my rights to terminate my lease and relocate? I don't feel as if I should have to come up with 1700 dollars I definitely don't have, just to break out of this lease and find a safer, habitable place to live. I couldn't afford that even if I wanted to, just coming off of disability and getting back to the workforce.
Any and all advice is welcome.
