Short writing exercise

I was given a prompt to write a short scene on, “A man, researcher/ scientist discovers the world is ending tomorrow and there’s no way to stop it, he returns home to his daughter,” and I was to expand on it. So what do we think guys?

Hesitantly, I placed my fingers on her head as I noticed her laying asleep on the couch. I ran my fingers through the length of her hair and pecked her gently on her cheek. Tears streamed down my cheek unto hers and her innocent brown eyes flickered open. In the cover of the dark, I hid mine own, I could not bear for her to witness me cry and worry for the reason.
“Dad? I fell asleep waiting for you, you said we were gonna watch a movie and eat Ice cream,” she said groggily, her eyes still heavy and drowsy.
“I know muffin, I got caught up at work, Daddy’s sorry,” the words could barely escape my mouth, and when it finally did, they came out broken and wet. “Let’s get you to bed muffin.” Gently and carefully, I picked her up and placed her in my arms, she felt heavier today.
She placed her hands on my shoulders, “I had so much fun at Uncle Mike’s, he gave me sweets and cupcakes!!”
Hiding my face from her gaze once more, I continued, “Gotta stop eating so many sweets muffin, you’ll grow fat,” I managed.
“No, It’s okay cause then we played basketball after, and I won..”
“Oh did you?”
“Yes! I think he let me win though,” She pouted. “Attagirl.”
Heavier and heavier she grew with each passing second, I couldn’t bear it anymore, I placed her down on her bed and wrapped her in her silk sheets and kissed her on her rosy cheeks. I was afraid I’d break down and beg in front of her, It wasn’t fitting for her to witness such a scene so quickly I exited the room, but her squeaky voice called out to me, pulling me back,
“Can you leave the lights on?” She asked. Facing away from her, I replied “Of course muffin, g-goodnight.” I trembled.
“Goodnight dad, I forgive you..” She said. The dam broke, It all came pouring down and I couldn’t face her, “What?” I asked.
“I forgive you for not showing up for father daughter night, we can always do it tomorrow right?” She said, I couldn’t see her but I knew the exact face she was making, the same one she made when my sister left her with me, I couldn’t disappoint her, “Yes muffin, tomorrow.”
“Promise?” She asked. I knew tomorrow was not coming, I knew father daughter night was not going to happen, but I couldn’t let the last face I see be one of disappointment, so I lied. A comforting one, but a lie nonetheless,
“I promise.”
