Opinion or advice on these travel plans?

I'm wondering if this is a terrible idea. Planning to take my mom, aunt and daughter to visit my parents' friends in either November or January. Wondering specifically about safety for three women and a teen traveling to and from GDL to Periban, Michoacan. (Language would not be an issue.)

Once in Periban we would have family friends to go with us on outings, etc., and i feel we would be very safe in the town. Wondering specifically about the travel mentioned above. Also, I know Morelia is a little closer, but the flights are so much more limited.
