Is there a trick or a "best way" to upgrading cards?

I seem to remember there was a trick to getting the most CL out of upgrading for the amount you spend at different rarities... Is that the case currently?

Or is it straightforward, the cost of upgrading is the same at all rarities, upgrade whatever whenever? cheers
