Missing Messages After Reinstalling

I Have a question about messages.

I uninstalled the app and later installed it again. After reinstalling, I noticed that all of my chat messages were gone.

If one of my friends sent me a message while the app was uninstalled, should I have received it after reinstalling and logging back into my account? Since I don't see any new messages now, does that mean my friend didn't send me anything, or could the message have been lost because I uninstalled the app?
