Scholarships available in uni?

Most uni have some type of scholarships that they give out based on a student's performance in the uni. For ex, if they got a stellar gpa. My dad said if i manage to get a scholarship i can pocket the money i save him from it. Is there any scholarship like that or do all scholarships have to be applied for and granted before coming to uni.
