First of all this is NOT a post discussing the evidence of the theory (because I believe there are good pieces of evidence for and against it), this is a post discussing the general idea of the theory and how I believe it would add to themes of Deltarune. For those who may not know the "Hometown isn't real" theory essentially states that Hometown is not a real town and only exists within the comfines of Deltarune, which was created by someone (likely Gaster). If anyone has any differing or similar opinions I'd love to hear them in the comments! I'll be tackling most of the two most common rebuttals I hear brought up against the theory to explain why I enjoy the theory so much, starting with

"If Hometown is fictional, then none of the characters/actions/plot will matter"

I ask why Deltarune matters to you at all then, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei don't exist in our world, there are no Dark Fountains or Roaring in our world, so why get invested in Deltarune of ultimately none of it is real. Well, it's the same reason Susie still cares about Ralsei, he feels real to her. Even if we know these characters aren't real, we're still able to relate to their issues, relationships, and personalites, which allows us to care about them. I hate to use this but I feel like a lot of people's resistance to the general idea of this theory feels like the "treating fictional characters like real people" Alex Hirsch tweet. Even if it's it's fiction, it can still impact us as real people. Chapter 4 is literally all about this with the white pen of hope. Tying that in with that is the next rebuttal

"Hometown being fake wouldn't add to the narrative of the game"

I believe it adds a lot of depth to the themes of fiction and reality within the realms of Deltarune, actually. Like I mentioned earlier with chapter 4, the normal route could be seen as the characters accepting that they aren't real (like the Dark Worlds in the universe of Deltarune), but despite that still they find meaning in their artificial lives, living on with hope and continuing their journeys, writing their own story from now on. The weird route could be seen as Noelle and Kris breaking free from Hometown and their false lives, adding to the theme of defying Fate. However, this would probably get subverted, as Kris and Noelle would fail if they do try to break the boundaries of the game of the game and live in our world (like Spamton did with trying to get into the Light World) and never be able to truly accept their reality like the characters do in the normal route.

Also I'm somewhat confused on why people post ch5 really dislike this theory. I haven't watched all of device theory but to my basic understanding device theory does also state that Hometown isn't real, and people love(d) that theory. Again I would love to hear differing opinions, because civilly discussing theories is some of the most fun that can be had in a community like Deltarune.
