Driving vs transit from SF to Levi's Stadium for concerts
figured i would share a breakdown for anyone heading down to santa clara from the city after work for a weekday concert like ac dc on august 5 2026. the 40 mile trek down 101 during peak evening commute is no joke and trying to leave the venue late at night can be a massive pain if you do not plan ahead.
if you decide to drive yourself because you need flexibility or want to leave right after work, you really need to plan your parking strategy. official stadium lots are super expensive and turning into red lot after bumper to bumper traffic on highway 237 will test your patience. if you want a much smoother experience check out prked first. you can rent a private driveway or garage right next to levis stadium from a local host. it is way cheaper than the standard stadium parking passes, feels much safer having your car on someone private property, and you get to totally bypass the hour long line of cars stuck crawling out of the main stadium lots when the show ends.
if you do not want to drive the full distance down 101 south in weekday rush hour traffic, public transit is definitely popular but it has its own tradeoffs. taking caltrain from 4th and king down to mountain view and transferring to the vta light rail drops you directly at great america station right in front of the stadium gates. the journey down is usually pretty easy and chill since you can just relax on the train instead of staring at brake lights.
the real issue with transit is getting back to san francisco after a late show. while vta runs extra light rail trains after major events, transferring back onto caltrain late at night can be stressful if service is reduced or if you barely miss a connecting train. uber or lyft back to sf late at night will easily cost over 150 dollars with surge pricing, so rely on rideshare only as a last resort.
honestly a great middle ground option is driving part of the way down to a peninsula station like mountain view or sunnyvale, parking there, and riding the vta light rail the rest of the way into the stadium to skip the immediate traffic zone.
hope this helps anyone planning their commute down to santa clara!
