Need Advice - How do you deal with Toxic Masculinity?

Men’s Input Only

I grew up in an environment where, for some reason, toxic masculinity was everywhere.

As a teenager:
-I was told I wasn’t a “real man” if I didn’t like playing soccer or other sports.
-I was told I wasn’t a “real man” if I didn’t smoke.
-I was told I wasn’t a “real man” if I didn’t fight or respond to provocation.

Now that I’m entering adulthood, I thought society would be more mature. But toxic masculinity hasn’t really disappeared.

I still see it in many ways. Society often judges men if:
-A man doesn’t give up his seat for a woman (even if she’s perfectly healthy) on public transportation.
-A man doesn’t pay the bills or financially provide for his partner.
- A man doesn’t have a deep voice.

Sometimes I feel exhausted and genuinely wonder why there have to be rigid standards of masculinity that people try to force onto others. If you don’t fit those standards, you’re judged or told you’re “not a real man.”

Man to man, how do you deal with this? How do you stay true to yourself without letting society’s expectations define your masculinity?
