Last year we took the kid to a water park.

It should have been an easy, carefree day, but there was one thing that stuck with us. He didn’t have the upper body strength to pull himself out of the water onto the floating obstacles. Watching him struggle was hard.

That night my husband and I talked about “tomorrow people.”

The people who are going to start eating better tomorrow.
Start going to the gym tomorrow.
Start taking care of themselves tomorrow.

We decided that’s not who we wanted to be. If we wanted a different future, we had to start today.

Six months ago I found a muddy obstacle 5K and signed all three of us up.

Ever since then, my husband has been working with the kid however he could. Being an every-other-weekend dad isn’t easy, but he made the most of the time in between. FaceTime push-up challenges. “Homework” texts. Constant encouragement. Little reminders that strength is built one rep at a time.

Today was race day.

It was hard. Really hard.

By the end, my husband was practically dragging him through some of the obstacles.

The kid was frustrated with himself. He felt like he’d failed.

My husband wouldn’t let him believe that.
He got right in front of him and reminded him what actually mattered.

“You didn’t quit.”
“You kept going.”
“You finished.”

Strength isn’t just what your muscles can do. Sometimes it’s choosing to take one more step when everything in you wants to stop.

I love that about my husband.

He doesn’t just tell us to believe we’re capable. He quietly spends months helping us become the kind of people who are.

He doesn’t wait for “tomorrow.”

And because of him, neither do we.

Tomorrow came, and he led the way
