Should drills firm up when you turn the chuck?

So I got an m12 on amazon bc they’re significantly cheaper than home depot but it came with a whole through the packaging and a huge dent on the metal ring around it, so I returned it and got sent a new one, however i noticed that the 1st dented one the chuck spun freely all the way and made the jaws go in and out still, however the 2nd one firms up. Is that normal operation? or are both fucked?
