2 Weeks In - My Experience Moving From Disc
Hello GameVox community, I moved over my Discord server to GameVox about 2 weeks ago. It is a small server, just a group of my friends. We have been thoroughly enjoying it, certainly there has been a couple bugs here and there that seem to self-resolve or are resolved with relative ease. I figured I'd mention them:
- One example was when creating the server it often took multiple reboots of the application for banner pics, profile pics, and other customizations to actually reflect/save.
- Another example- Visual bugs when switching between voice channels. We have seen ourselves be in 2 or more voice channels at the same time. Since it was just a visual issue - no problem.
- Last example - we have run into so far is sometimes when changing audio input settings, I will start outputting to my friends in mono - (they can hear me in their left ear only, haha.). I am able to fix it by simply leaving the voice channel and returning. Again all of these issues are easily resolvable or simply visual so we are overall very happy with the product so far.
The one thing we have been struggling with compared to our experience with Disc - Notifications! Since we are such a small server and all friends IRL, I actually DO want to be notified on the desktop and mobile application whenever anyone posts in any channel on our server. I would also love to have the application Icon on both desktop and mobile show a little notification signal similar to Disc's read dot to let me know if I missed the notification, there is something unread. Since it is so easy to mute a server entirely - and honestly at this point, I think anyone that has used apps like this is used to muting servers, I think notifications should be universally on by default for servers especially if you have explicitly allowed them on Mobile.
The reason I moved to GameVox was due to privacy concerns in how my data and my friends data is handled and sold. I am curious if GameVox has plans to move to E2EE for text as well? If so, what will be the protocol for previous text sent in DM's or servers? Will it become encrypted at least at rest? Will you do a purge of data on your end that was in transit and logged retroactively?
One thing that also stood out to me as a little tiny bit concerning is the amount of activity logs there are. If I can see that level of detail, then I am sure it lives on GameVox servers as well. I mean it would be great if that was stored at the client level but I highly doubt it. Are activity logs currently encrypted or would you be liable to provide them upon subpoena?
I expect to use this application for years to come and would love to help shape the outcome if the development team is open to feedback :) Thanks for building an alternative that actually works and isn't obtuse to use like some other alternatives for my less technical friends.
Also, if some of my issues are simply caused by my own misuse or lack of understanding of the application - feel free to call me a nincompoop <3.
