[MN] 30-day suspension for no-insurance ticket. Single mom, DoorDash is my only income. Can I get a limited license?
Hi everyone,
I am located in Minnesota and looking for some guidance on how to handle an upcoming driver's license suspension.
About a month ago, I got pulled over because my tabs were expired. During the stop, the officer discovered my auto insurance policy had canceled a month prior due to a lack of funds. I was issued a citation, and being incredibly stressed out, I just went ahead and paid the ticket online.
I now realize that paying the ticket counted as a guilty plea. I just received a letter in the mail from Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) stating that my license is going to be suspended for 30 days due to the no-insurance conviction.
My issue is that my only source of income right now is driving for DoorDash. I am a single mom with two children, and we have no family in the country to lean on. If I cannot drive for a month, I will lose my livelihood and won't be able to afford rent or take care of my kids.
For context, I immediately purchased a new insurance policy a few days after getting the citation, so I am currently insured.
My questions for the lawyers here:
- Am I eligible to apply for a Minnesota Limited License (work permit) so I can continue DoorDashing during the 30-day suspension?
- Does gig work/independent contracting like DoorDash count as valid "employment" under MN limited license rules?
- What are the exact steps I need to take with Minnesota DVS to request this, and do I need to ask my new insurance provider for an SR-22 certificate?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
