[Build Help/Discussion] AM4 Budget vs. AM5 Investment? Need advice for a 10-year 1080p build
Hey fellow gamers,
I'm currently planning a new 1080p AAA gaming PC (mainly preparing for the eventual GTA 6 PC drop) and I'm caught in the classic builder's dilemma. I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially regarding platform longevity and where to buy parts right now!
1. The Platform Dilemma: AM4 vs. AM5 (Budget vs. Invest) I initially looked at a budget AM4 build (Ryzen 5 5600) because motherboard and DDR4 RAM prices are incredibly cheap, saving me about ₹15,000 upfront. But I want this PC to last me for years with easy drop-in upgrades down the line. Is the AM5 platform worth the current DDR5 and Gen4 SSD price premiums to guarantee socket support through 2029+?
2. Intel vs. AMD in 2026 Given Intel's recent history with high power draw and heat, AMD seems like the obvious choice for power efficiency and long-term socket support. But if anyone thinks an Intel Core i5 path makes more sense for my specific situation, I'm all ears.
3. The Proposed AM5 "Future-Proof" Build (~₹72k) Here is the baseline I'm working with to balance performance, AM5 longevity, and my strict power limit:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F (Great performance, 65W TDP)
- GPU: Radeon RX 6600 8GB (Extremely power-efficient for 1080p)
- Motherboard: B650M (Gigabyte/ASRock)
- RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz (Prices are high right now, considering starting with 16GB)
- Storage: 1TB Gen4 NVMe SSD
- PSU: MSI MAG A550BN 550W (Tier C, 80+ Bronze, should play nice with the modified sine wave UPS)
4. Where is the best place to buy parts right now? I’ve been tracking prices, but I wanted to ask about seller reliability. Any best online pc builders or is it better to just take these online quotes and bargain at local offline markets?
Questions for the community:
- Would you pull the trigger on AM5 right now despite the RAM/SSD price hikes, or build a cheap AM4 machine and just replace the whole thing in 4 years?
- Has anyone run a similar build on a 360W modified sine wave UPS without tripping it?
- Any changes you’d make to the build list for strictly 1080p gaming?
Thanks in advance for the help! Let the Intel/AMD and AM4/AM5 wars begin in the comments.
