Was this a mortal or venial sin?
I was talking to my family about how I was frustrated that I was mistaken for being transgender by a friend’s parent. I elaborated more on why the parent might have thought that about me by explaining that my friend recently came out as gay to his parent, and the parent thought that he was influenced by someone else (the parent came to the conclusion that I must have been trans and was ”manipulating” my friend, in a sense.)
When my family heard this, they started talking about how young people are attention seeking, and moved on to other topics that spread hate instead of understanding and compassion. This was not my intention. However, I am not really sure what my original intention in sharing was, to be honest. Before sharing, I was doubting myself whether sharing the full context would be gossip or mortal sin. And unfortunately, I thought it wouldn’t count as gossip.
Now that I realize that it was indeed gossip, I wanted to ask if what happened was mortal or venial?
