Looking for book recommendations based on my favourites
Hi! I’m looking for some new books to read and would love some recommendations based on my taste.
I read quite a lot, but lately I’ve realised that I often keep reading books that aren’t really for me. Books are expensive and I hate not finishing something once I’ve started it, so I sometimes end up forcing myself through a book even when I’m not enjoying it.
I’ve also noticed that most of the books I really love are written by women. I’m also a big Margaret Atwood fan.
Some books and authors I’ve loved:
Good Person by Kirsten McDougall, Pretty much everything by Sayaka Murata, The Vegetarian by, Han Kang (I’ve tried some of her other books, but they weren’t quite for me), Eleanor Oliphant Is, Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason, Mrs March by Virginia Feito
Annie Bot by Sierra Greer, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Margaret Atwood in general
My favourite classic is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
For comparison, I really don’t like Sally Rooney and Colleen Hoover. I’m also not really into romance novels, especially trope-heavy romance. Things like enemies-to-lovers, fake dating or books that are mainly built around a romantic relationship just don’t interest me very much.
I also tried My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh on paper, it sounded exactly like something I would enjoy. But I just couldn’t get into it. I’m not even sure why. Maybe I just didn’t quite get it.
I’m open to pretty much any genre. Looking at my favourites, I think I’m drawn to books that are psychologically interesting, a little strange or unsettling and have characters that actually stay with you. But I’m very open to suggestions outside of that too.
Based on these, what would you recommend?
