How are Catholics supposed to respond when caught in an overwhelming presence of sin?

I’m perfectly happy if the answer is to read the bible more and my question may be very circumstantial… but for Catholics who believe, how are you supposed to respond when suddenly caught in a life situation of overwhelming presence of sin and damnation in your life by others around you? This doesn’t happen often because the devil can only fool you once but take for instance you completely misplace your trust in a friend or coworker who literally leads you right into a den of literal hell and damnation despite knowing that you’re a practicing Catholic.
