Hair Transplant - Marathahalli - Bangalore — 2.5 Week Update (Cost, Team, Recovery, Concerns)
TL;DR / Questions for the community (details below):
-
Donor area shows visibly uneven extraction — over-harvested in some patches, sparse in others. Is this a technique red flag or something that can still even out?
-
Recipient area has a decent hairline shape, but an abrupt density drop-off right behind it, with gaps between graft clusters in the crown. Normal at 2.5 weeks, or a design/placement issue?
-
We negotiated and paid for a doctor-performed procedure, but most of the actual work was done by junior staff (details below), with the lead doctor involved for only ~15–20 minutes total. Is this a common bait-and-switch in the industry, and how would you push back on it?
Background
Went in for FUE at a well-reviewed Bangalore clinic (name withheld for now while I sort things out with them directly). Documenting the whole process here — good, bad, and confusing — mostly so others have a real reference point, and partly because I want honest outside eyes on a few things that are bothering me.
The Cost Negotiation
Initial quote was ₹5 lakhs for a doctor-performed procedure, or ₹3 lakhs for a technician-assisted one. After negotiating, they agreed to do the doctor-performed procedure at ₹3 lakhs. I went in expecting that price point specifically because of that agreement.
Who Actually Did the Work
This is where it gets frustrating. From what I could tell during the procedure:
- Most of the extraction was handled by a junior doctor on staff, relatively early in her career, who did her best but was clearly less experienced.
- Most of the implantation was handled by a senior technician/assistant, with another assistant rotating in and out throughout the day.
- The lead doctor I'd negotiated with was only present for about 15–20 minutes total — a few minutes drawing the hairline, and a short stretch during implantation.
When I raised this afterward with the clinic manager, she brushed it off, suggesting I'd probably been asleep for parts of the procedure and didn't actually know who was doing what. I was fully awake and alert the entire time — no sedation knocked me out — and having that concern dismissed like that stung more than I expected.
Before HT
- Got general check for health issues - BP, Sugar etc.
- Blood tests
- Clearance for medications that I am taking already etc.
Pre-Op Medications on the HT Day
- Antibiotic (cephalosporin-type) — infection prevention
- Tranexamic acid ("Pause") — reduces bleeding during the procedure
- Pantoprazole — stomach protection
- 0.5mg tablet (alprazolam) — anti-anxiety/mild sedative
- Blood drawn for PRP
Operation
- AM Head down - got about 15-16 anesthesia injections all around the donor area and extraction of follicles (hard to breathe with the head down for 3-4 hours)
- Light Lunch
- PM Head up - lying on neck - got about another 15-16 anesthesia injections on the recipient areas - front of the head, temple, crown area.
- Got 5-10 injections as I felt more pain during the process
- Got Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
Post-Op Care (Week 1/2)
- Painkillers + anti-inflammatories for 7 days
- Donor area: cleaned daily with a Betadine solution. After that mix Fusidic Acid cream & Avene Cicalfate moisturizer 1:1 and apply or pat
- Recipient area: no wash until Day 10, then a gentle shampoo - Dermadue + Avene Cicalfate moisturizer daily for 15 days
- The scabs fell during the 8 to 12 days. Little shedding at this point
Recovery
Had to sleep sitting upright / on my back only for a full week to avoid disturbing the grafts. This was genuinely one of the hardest parts physically — more painful and exhausting than I expected going in. If you're planning this, mentally prepare for the sleep disruption more than anything else.
Current State (2.5 Weeks In)
Photos attached. Two specific things stand out to me:
- Donor area: clearly uneven extraction pattern — some zones look thinned out much more than others, creating a patchy look rather than uniform thinning.
- Recipient area: hairline shape itself looks okay — soft, natural-ish border — but there's a noticeable density drop right behind it, and visible gaps between clusters especially in the crown.
I know it's early and shedding/regrowth changes a lot between now and month 6–12. But the donor pattern doesn't seem like something that "grows out" — it's a harvest/technique issue as far as I understand, not a timeline issue.
Questions again, if you skipped to the end:
- Does the donor area unevenness look like a real technique problem to you?
- Is the recipient density gap something that typically resolves, or does it point to placement issues baked in at time of implant?
- How would you handle the fact that we paid specifically for doctor-performed work but got mostly junior-staff/technician work instead?
Appreciate any honest feedback — trying to figure out if this is worth escalating with the clinic or just something to track and see how it grows out.
