Question about transferring license plate to someone else

Hi I recently got a new car and my girlfriend had got a specialty license plate a while back so nobody could have it so I could have it eventually. She’s been rocking it on her car, but now that’s it time for me to have it, how does the process work for people who have done it before? I see that she has to sign a release paper for the DMV for me to have it, but does she have to re register her car? Modify her registration? What’s the process for her ordering a new plate? One option would be to just release the plate to me then order a new plate, but that would take a while since she needs her car almost everyday so I don’t want her to be driving around with no plate (even though that’s common here lol). Any help or experience with someone who’s done this? Thanks
