I lied to save my sanity but now anxiety is killing me
Hey! I made a huge mistake and I need to tell somebody who won't make it any worse. It's going to be a long one, sorry.
I've been working in a setting with a small team for a couple of years and lately I've had a tense situation with my main coworker, a guy around 50 years old. Ever since a couple of rookies came into our team, things have gone sour. Now, I knew from the start he was a difficult man to work with, but he became so much paranoid and perfectionist about anything, from our reports, to how clean I keep my desk, to who I dare to speak to, even out of clock. I started feeling like he was trying to isolate us, but I ignored it because I loved my position at this company. However it all got worse day by day, until I started dreading coming to work and everybody could see it too. I lost my appetite during the day, fearing what he might be ranting about next. I came to a point I felt suicidal and I spent days without any real emotions, just so I could function like he wanted to. It was too much and everybody on the team told me I should take less responsabilities, that we should do something about it. I thought I could trust them, I really did. They were the ones starting to rant everytime he was absent and I made the mistake to join them as well.
So, what happened? That someone snapped after yet another discussion and told the Guy Himself what we have been saying behind his back, when I wasn't there. If I hadn't been told by a coworker, I wouldn't have known until I came back. And that's when I had a complete mental breakdown and collapsed on the spot, then rushed to a nearby hospital. Another mistake by my part because I dared to ask for sick leave after the incident, because my supervisor (who very damn well knew about this Guy) decided to have a 1:1 talk with him. And this talk made things only worse!! Fucking hell!!
When I came back, still under tranquilizers and quite terrified of what I would see- I was right to think so. I was insulted by him, a lot. And none of my coworkers were helping now, they all saved their asses in the meantime. He pretty much discovered anything I said, even what I didn't say or what he thought I could have said and started accusing me all day long. So now I had two options: confirm the truth or lie like the others to stay in peace.
Unfortunately I decided to lie. Half-truths, one would say. I took responsability for some and denied some of them, I just wanted him to leave me alone. But he kept asking and asking, his questions were mostly reinforcements for his paranoias at this point. He wanted to know anyone who talked badly about him, which if I had to be honest- I would have had to say every single person on our team. Our supervisor included. I also knew that if I told him so, he would have gone insane on us and make our life a new type of misery. I also felt pity I think, before this mess he wasn't that bad.
I just wanted this shit to be over, I think.
So I said it was another team, one he never talked to and disliked from the start. Only then he calmed down a bit and drew conclusions from his own paranoias, it made sense to him. "Yes, of course. I knew it."
I surely had to be extra careful and patient the following days, reassuring him of everything which only made my tension rise. I didn't notice until now, but this man reminds me a lot of my past abuser in a way. I will never tell a soul about this, but now I can't ignore the signs anymore. I'm switching teams and I will be gone soon, if my supervisor doesn't fuck this up too. I don't trust her anymore, so yeah.
What's the issue now then? That I learnt the Guy is going all the way asking people about the lie I told, or saying "don't believe anything bad you hear about me!!" to pretty much anybody he comes across. And I even saw him talk to a guy from the team I accused aand he chose the most noisy, chatty bully ever to talk to. I'm genuinely scared to come back to work again, I fear of being shouted at again all day long. I know I will be alone in this, too.
I know I dug my own grave and there's no way out besides leaving this job, but I had to take this out of my chest. I never had any problems at this job until this dude showed up, I swear to god!!
Tldr; I trusted the wrong people and told a lie about an innocent teamwork to save my ass. Now anxiety of being found out is eating me alive
