Beta blocker improves my adderall?

Medication & Side Effects

I have been on 15mg xr for over a year since I started grad school. Genuinely saved my life (figuratively) because I didn’t realize just how unorganized my brain was before that and I could finally have a schedule and focus on school.

Another ADHD friend that takes Ritalin told me they get prescribed beta blockers for test and presentation anxiety. I get horrible presentation anxiety and test anxiety (very rarely experience anxiety otherwise so I had little coping mechanisms for this) so I asked my psychiatrist about this and she was like yea absolutely so many of my patients in school take beta blockers for this. So she prescribed me 10mg propranolol and I take as needed, maybe once a week.

I started to notice a synergy with my meds. After my test or presentation and the beta blocker was still in my system, I feel a boost of focus, productivity, and mental clarity almost as if I took another extra 10mg. I also find that im quicker on my feet and can recall from what I studied and think critically much better.

It’s so bizarre. I even feel like I sleep better those days hours after it’s worn off. I’m not sure if the fact that I’ve been so hyper my whole life and adderal didn’t change that (just helped my focus and motivation) that the first time I feel calm completely quieted that side of my neurodivergence that was so energetic and scatter brained. I’ve never done drugs recreationally besides weed which I didn’t like because it would give me anxiety, even the “chill” kind, so I’ve never taken downers or anything like that before. So I can’t speak on if other drugs have a similar effect.

I’ve never heard of anyone mentioning this effect and I think it might be an ADHD thing specifically, like taking anti anxiety meds lo key cure so many symptoms and help me cognitively as well.

Anyone else experience this? If you’re in a similar situation with meds and also get situational anxiety, try beta blockers! They’re miracle workers.
