STEM OPT ending July 2027 - DBA or PhD for Day 1 CPT? Looking for advice on universities

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to plan ahead and would really appreciate some advice from people who've gone through this.

I'm currently on STEM OPT (expires July 2027) and work full-time as a Revenue Cycle Analyst in healthcare. I have an MS in Health Informatics and my employer has already entered me in the H-1B lottery once, so I'll have one more attempt in March 2027.

I'm looking at Day 1 CPT only as a backup plan in case I don't get selected.

So far I've looked into:

  • Westcliff University – DBA (Business Intelligence & Data Analytics)
  • National Louis University – DBA

Both would likely be for May 2027, but I'm wondering if I should be looking at a PhD instead of a DBA.

My questions are:

  • Is a PhD a better option than a DBA for someone in my situation?
  • Are there any good universities offering Day 1 CPT PhD programs that you'd recommend?
  • Has anyone recently enrolled after the new DHS F-1 rule changes? Has it affected your planning or school choice?

My long-term goal is to continue working in data analytics/healthcare analytics, so I'd like to choose a program that actually adds value to my career instead of just maintaining status.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any university recommendations. Thanks!
