Developers who make "difficult" games hide behind "skill issue" culture to get away with bad craftsmanship.
It's very rare to find a video game where it feels like my fault when I die, and that's the only kind of difficulty that's fun. Lately I run into a lot of video game deaths where I pressed the button, but the character stands still anyway and I get to take damage I reacted to correctly and on-time.
Sometimes it's because manufacturers have legitimized the myth that wireless input lag is undetectable. I have solved this issue for multiple games but switching to wired.
Sometimes it's because I haven't met some fuck-you conditions and so my input is ignored. If I dodge or block at the last second but the character needs time before the action is respected, then the game is bad. Full stop. Respect my reflexes. I don't want to play as a character who is slower than me. I shouldn't have to be fast enough for both of us.
Sometimes it's because optimization just isn't considered cool anymore.
I feel like the PS2 God of War games and Sifu are some of the only games I've played in months that only kill me when I'm too slow or put in a bad input.
