How are people dealing with the new mining / prospecting system?

I read some comments that people seem to either ignore it and just mine without resource probes or try to use probes but don’t get how they are supposed to work.

I have so far also just ignored them in my current play through. Am I missing out? How are you running your mining ops in practice?
