To pass your Objective Assessment (OA) on the very first try, you need to understand core psychological perspectives, differentiate between classic learning theories, memorize developmental milestones, and recognize key diagnostic criteria for psychological disorders.

Because WGU assessments evaluate your ability to apply psychological concepts to real-world scenarios, this guide focuses on high-yield theoretical frameworks, behavioral principles, and clinical definitions—**written entirely in a clean, text-based format to optimize your study framework.**

# Core Psychological Perspectives & Foundations

# 1. Major Perspectives in Psychology

Psychologists view human behavior through different lenses, each emphasizing distinct causes and mechanisms:

* **Biological / Neuroscience:** Focuses on how genetics, brain structures, neurotransmitters, and the endocrine system influence behavior and mental processes.
* **Behavioral:** Emphasizes observable behavior and how it is learned through environmental interactions (conditioning), rejecting unobservable mental states.
* **Cognitive:** Focuses on internal mental processes such as memory, thinking, problem-solving, language, and decision-making.
* **Psychodynamic:** Rooted in Sigmund Freud's work, emphasizing the role of the unconscious mind, childhood experiences, and repressed internal conflicts.
* **Humanistic:** Focuses on human potential, personal growth, self-actualization, and free will (associated with Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow).
* **Socio-cultural:** Examines how cultural context, social norms, and peer environments shape human behavior and thought.

# 2. Research Methods

* **Experimental Research:** The only research method that can establish a *cause-and-effect* relationship. It involves manipulating an **independent variable (IV)** to measure its effect on a **dependent variable (DV)** while controlling extraneous variables through random assignment.
* **Correlational Research:** Examines the statistical relationship between two or more variables without manipulating them. Remember: **Correlation does not equal causation!** A correlation coefficient (r*r*) ranges from −1.0−1.0 to +1.0+1.0; the closer the number is to −1−1 or +1+1, the stronger the relationship.

# Key Behavioral & Learning Theories

# 1. Classical Conditioning (Ivan Pavlov & John B. Watson)

Learning through association, where a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a biologically potent stimulus to elicit a conditioned response.

* **Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS):** A stimulus that naturally triggers a response without prior training (e.g., food).
* **Unconditioned Response (UCR):** An unlearned, natural response to the UCS (e.g., salivating to food).
* **Conditioned Stimulus (CS):** A previously neutral stimulus that, after being paired with the UCS, comes to trigger a response (e.g., a bell ringing before food is presented).
* **Conditioned Response (CR):** A learned response to a previously neutral stimulus (e.g., salivating at the sound of the bell).

# 2. Operant Conditioning (B.F. Skinner)

Learning in which behavior is strengthened if followed by a reinforcer or diminished if followed by a punisher.

* **Reinforcement (Increases behavior):**
   * *Positive Reinforcement:* Adding a desirable stimulus to increase a behavior (e.g., giving a child a sticker for doing homework).
   * *Negative Reinforcement:* Removing an *aversive* (unpleasant) stimulus to increase a behavior (e.g., turning off a loud seatbelt buzzer once you buckle up).
* **Punishment (Decreases behavior):**
   * *Positive Punishment:* Adding an aversive stimulus to decrease a behavior (e.g., assigning extra chores for misbehaving).
   * *Negative Punishment:* Removing a desirable stimulus to decrease a behavior (e.g., taking away smartphone privileges for breaking curfew).

# Human Development & Cognition

# 1. Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development

Jean Piaget proposed that children progress through four distinct stages of cognitive maturation:

* **Sensorimotor Stage (Birth to 2 years):** Experience the world through senses and actions. *Key milestone:* Developing **object permanence** (understanding that objects continue to exist even when out of sight).
* **Preoperational Stage (2 to 6/7 years):** Use language and mental imagery, but lack logical reasoning. *Characteristics:* Egocentrism (inability to take another's perspective) and lack of **conservation** (understanding that changing an object's form does not change its mass or volume).
* **Concrete Operational Stage (7 to 11 years):** Children gain mental operations that enable them to think logically about concrete events, master conservation, and perform mathematical transformations.
* **Formal Operational Stage (12 years through adulthood):** Development of abstract reasoning, systematic problem-solving, and hypothetical thinking.

# 2. Memory Systems

* **Sensory Memory:** Extremely brief storage of sensory information (<3<3 seconds).
* **Short-Term / Working Memory:** Limited capacity storage (holding about 7±27±2 items, or modern research suggests closer to 4±14±1 items) for about 2020 to 3030 seconds.
* **Long-Term Memory:** Vast, seemingly unlimited storage capacity.
   * *Explicit (Declarative) Memory:* Conscious recollection of facts and events (divided into *episodic* memory for life events and *semantic* memory for general knowledge).
   * *Implicit (Nondeclarative) Memory:* Unconscious memory for skills and procedures (e.g., riding a bike, tying shoes).

# Psychological Disorders & Therapies

# 1. Common Psychological Disorders

* **Major Depressive Disorder:** Characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities (anhedonia), changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue, and feelings of worthlessness lasting for at least two weeks.
* **Bipolar Disorder:** Characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, alternating between manic episodes (hyperactivity, grandiosity, decreased need for sleep) and depressive episodes.
* **Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD):** Chronic, excessive, and uncontrollable worry about everyday events, accompanied by physical symptoms like muscle tension, restlessness, and fatigue.
* **Schizophrenia:** A severe psychotic disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, diminished emotional expression, and cognitive deficits.

# 2. Therapeutic Approaches

* **Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):** A structured, goal-oriented therapy that helps patients identify and challenge distorted, negative thought patterns and replace them with healthier behavioral responses.
* **Psychoanalysis:** Freudian therapy aimed at bringing repressed unconscious conflicts into conscious awareness through techniques like free association and dream analysis.
* **Humanistic / Person-Centered Therapy:** Developed by Carl Rogers, emphasizing a supportive, non-judgmental environment featuring **unconditional positive regard**, empathy, and active listening to foster self-exploration.

# Sample Questions with Answers and Rationales

**Operant Conditioning**
A manager notices that an employee consistently arrives late to team meetings. To discourage this behavior, the manager decides to remove the employee's ability to telecommute on Fridays. According to operant conditioning, what type of consequence is the manager applying?
A. Positive reinforcement
B. Negative reinforcement
C. Positive punishment
D. Negative punishment

*Answer: D. Negative punishment.*
*Rationale:* The goal is to *decrease* a behavior (arriving late), which rules out reinforcement options. Because the manager is *removing* a desirable privilege (telecommuting on Fridays) to achieve this, it is classified as negative punishment. Positive punishment (C) involves *adding* an undesirable consequence.

**Cognitive Development**
During a game of peek-a-boo, an 8-month-old infant watches as her mother hides behind a blanket. When the mother reappears, the infant reacts with visible delight and surprise, acting as though the mother genuinely vanished and reappeared. This infant is likely struggling to grasp which cognitive concept?
A. Conservation
B. Egocentrism
C. Object permanence
D. Abstract reasoning

*Answer: C. Object permanence.*
*Rationale:* Object permanence is the understanding that objects and people continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched. Piaget noted that this concept develops during the sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years), which is why infants under 8 months love peek-a-boo—they genuinely believe the hidden person no longer exists.

# High-Yield WGU C180 Test-Taking Strategies

* **Read Scenarios Carefully for Conditioning Questions:** When a question describes a reward or punishment scenario, ask yourself two questions first:
   1. Is the behavior being *increased* (reinforcement) or *decreased* (punishment)?
   2. Is something being *added/presented* (positive) or *taken away/removed* (negative)? Answering these two questions guarantees you will pick the right operant conditioning term.
* **Do Not Confuse Independent and Dependent Variables:** In research design questions, remember that the **Independent Variable (IV)** is what the researcher *manipulates or changes*, while the **Dependent Variable (DV)** is what gets *measured* as the outcome.
* **Leverage the Pre-Assessment (PA):** Complete your PA and meticulously review every rationale. WGU OAs mirror the structure and conceptual difficulty of the PA, making it your single best indicator of OA readiness.
