I Am Flabbergasted, Help Me Make Sense of Teacher Compensation In Texas
I am currently speechless regarding teacher pay in Texas and want to check with you all to see if I'm missing something here. It is very possible I will be moving to the DFW area in the near future to be closer to family and I have been looking at the salary schedules for the various districts. Currently, in California, with 14 years of experience and a master's I am just over $100k/year with max out potential of $127k at 25 years. Now, using Irving ISD's numbers (according to Google the most well paid district in DFW) my salary would plummet to $71k/year with a max out potential of $90k at 40 years experience. To make this worse is that Irving ISD's monthly health insurance premium for employee plus spouse is roughly $1k versus the $300 I'm paying now. Is this really the state of affairs regarding teacher compensation in Texas?
TLDR: High chance I will be moving to DFW. Texas teacher salary is $30k lower than my current California teacher salary. Is there a catch here? Am I missing something? I can't imagine the lower cost of living and no state taxes will make up for $30k less a year.
