How do I(18M) navigate going into long distance with my girlfriend(18F) who has a control freak dad?
For context, me and my girlfriend have been dating for around 3 years with a breakup in between. I know I’m young but I do think long distance is worth it with her(we are about a 4 hour drive or 1 hour plane ride away). Even when we were in school together, we would never hang out outside of school due to her controlling father. He has immense distrust in her and actively looks for reasons to get mad at her. She cant even go out with her friends without him checking that the friends mom is picking her up and dropping her off. He told her that in college, every time she goes out she has to tell him. I thought this was an exaggeration but she said he was fully serious and has mentioned this before. Although I have worked through not seeing her or calling her that often for a while and most of our relationship being over text, I can no longer do this in college. I understand that having a controlling father is not her fault and support her through it, but at the end of the day I am still a person and deserve to be loved, even if it appears in ways other than hanging out. All she texts about is herself and she has a million problems she complains about but is unwilling to take actionable change to fix any of them. She is deathly scared of her dad due to trauma and will not oppose him, even when shes in college. She says in college everything will change and be good but she has a history of her words not equating to actions, so I dont know how much I trust that. How do I navigate such a situation?
