Chapter 2: The Summons

The silence between them stretched like a blade.

Luz was horrified.

A Coven Scout had found her.

A Coven Scout had seen her cast magic—but not with her own hands. With something else.

A Coven Scout who happened to be Amity Blight.

Luz's hand was still pressed against the cobblestones. Her heart was beating so fast that she was afraid it would jump out of her chest.

“Long time no see, Luz,” Amity said, her voice calm.

Normally, that voice would have soothed Luz.

But now, it was terrifying to hear.

“It's okay. Stand up. I'm not here to start a fight,” Amity said.

Luz swallowed the lump in her throat.

She stood up.

“Sneaking in to watch a Coven Scout Exhibition and stealing a pair of boots was really stupid,” Amity commented.

“I'm sorry, but I really wanted to see the exhibition. Plus, an Adflea attacked me on the way. I managed to escape by throwing raw meat at it. Fairies are aggressive carnivores, after all, but the boots weren't so lucky,” Luz said, bowing her head in embarrassment.

And it was the truth.

“Go home, Luz. This isn't a game. You're going to get yourself killed one day,” Amity said in a voice of cold indifference, though a pitch of genuine worry lingered beneath it. “I'm letting you off the hook… for old times' sake.”

A wide grin flashed across Luz's face.

For a brief moment, her mind returned to the good old days of her childhood—being a normal student at Hexside, running through the hallways, laughing and playing with Amity as if she were the best thing that had ever happened to her.

“But you need to stop what you're doing,” Amity said.

Luz's mind snapped back to the present.

“I can't cover for you forever,” Amity said with a neutral voice, like a physicist stating that gravity pulls downward.

Then she turned and started heading in the other direction.

Luz let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding and collapsed onto the ground.

“Phew, that was close.”

“But seriously,” Luz said to herself as she scrambled to her feet, “I need to go home now. Thank the Titan it was Amity, or else I would have been caught.”

A few minutes later, Luz stood in front of her home.

Her home wasn't anything special.

It was anything but special.

The walls were patched together using rotted Titan bone fragments, rusted scrap metal, and discarded wood. Instead of the sturdy clay tiles typically found in the normal houses of the Boiling Isles, the roof was covered in old tarps, large monster hides, and mismatched shingles held down by heavy rocks, crammed into the poorest, most congested alleys of Bonesborough.

At least it wasn't located on the hazardous outskirts near the Boiling Sea. That would have been a disaster.

“Cariño,” said Camila as she opened the door and wrapped her arms around Luz. “Welcome home, mija.”

“You're still using the human language, Mamá?” Luz asked, genuinely curious.

“Ah, yes,” Camila said rather enthusiastically. “Secretly collecting junk from the human realm town of Gravesfield was a wonderful idea. They even have a black shadow box that reflects only sadness.”

“Mamá, please,” Luz said with a serious voice she rarely, if ever, used. “You need to stop secretly going to the human realm. If Emperor Belos finds out…” She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence as a shiver ran down her spine.

“Ah, don't worry, mija,” Camila said confidently. “I'll stop once we've saved up enough to start a stable life and move to a better house. You know how things have been ever since Manny left us.”

Tears began to well in Luz's eyes as her mind wandered back to the evening her father showed her how to find magic in the mundane—how he waved goodbye to Luz and Camila as he boarded the Titan Trapper Ferry across the ocean to a distant island, promising to come back with rare items that he could sell for a fortune of snails and finally rid them of their poverty.

Luz had been eight years old then, eagerly squealing and waving her dad off, never knowing it would be the last time she truly saw him.

It had been a decade since that day.

The letters stopped coming when she was nine.

Manny never came back.

Luz pushed the thought to the back of her mind. She didn't want to think about it.

After dinner, she entered her small, dingy room and locked the door.

She collapsed onto her bed, staring at the ceiling.

She was smiling.

Because she was finally a real witch.

A witch who could cast magic.

“Tomorrow, I'll try out the other glyphs,” she said to herself, a huge grin lighting up her entire face.

Then the world went black as she fell asleep.

When she woke up, it was morning.

She joyfully got up, stretching her long and lanky arms.

“Good morning, terrifying fantasy world,” she said, as if greeting the entire Demon Realm itself.

She looked at the clock.

11 AM.

“Yikes!” Luz exclaimed. “Man, I never slept so long. Mamá must have already left for the potion stall.”

Luz was thinking about hurrying to the Marketplace to help out Camila.

But then her eyes fell on a letter tucked under the doorstep.

She picked it up, wondering who had sent it.

Her blood ran cold.

It was no ordinary letter.

It was from the Emperor's Coven.

She pulled the letter from the envelope and began reading, her eyes growing more anxious with each progressing word:

"By order of the Emperor's Coven, you are hereby summoned for questioning regarding the theft of Coven property."
