Just finished putting together a full route through the Outer Hebrides and figured I'd share it here since half the posts I see about this trip get stuck on the same question: how do the ferries actually work.

**Short version:** you land on Barra (or take the ferry from Oban), work your way north through the Uists on causeways, then two proper ferry hops, Barra to Eriskay and Berneray to Harris, get you up to Harris and Lewis. Five days is enough to do it properly without feeling rushed. Six if you want a lazy beach afternoon on Harris, which honestly I'd recommend.

**Things that surprised me putting this together:**

* Barra's airport runway is literally the beach, and the flight schedule shifts with the tide
* Luskentyre on Harris gets compared to the Caribbean and it's not even hype, it's just also freezing
* Hire car stock on the islands themselves is tiny, most people bring a car over from Glasgow or Inverness instead
* Callanish Stones (older than Stonehenge) are basically empty after 5pm
